Sedation Service

Many people feel very apprehensive about dental surgery. It can be a daunting prospect, even if you haven’t had a particularly bad experience in the past.

The team at The Implant Centre will take the utmost care to ensure that your experience at the centre is as comfortable as possible. Our surgeons and dentists will talk to you throughout your treatment, explaining as much or as little as you wish. Many of our patients have commented that they find this to be extremely calming and reassuring.

It is often the case that, with careful treatment planning and discussion, implant dentistry can be much less traumatic than root-canal treatment or having crowns and bridges made.

Most of our patients are happy to be treated under a normal dental local anaesthetic. However, for more nervous patients or for larger cases, we are happy to offer sedation which will leave you totally unaware of the treatment being carried out making your surgical experience far more relaxed.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by bacteria in plaque. If allowed to stay on the teeth, plaque can cause your gums to become red and swollen. This is called gingivitis.

In some cases, the disease will progress to a more severe form of gum disease known as periodontitis. This is where gum next to the plaque peels away from the tooth, forming a ‘pocket’. The bone beneath this pocket is eaten away.

This bone supports your teeth, so this destructive process can result in loosening of the teeth and eventually even their loss.

Sarah Diederich is a specialist periodontist with over twenty years’ experience treating gum disease. She has built up an excellent reputation with both dentists and their patients in Sussex, where she has worked for many years.

She is well known for her caring and sensitive approach with periodontal patients and also for the outstanding results she achieves with her treatment.

Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene treatment is provided here at The Implant Centre by our specially trained dental hygienists Yasmin and Laura. Between them they have a wealth of knowledge and expertise to help you achieve and maintain a healthy mouth. They are experts in treating nervous patients and they will help to make you feel at ease during your appointments in our modern and comfortable dental surgeries.

Here is what you can expect from a hygiene appointment:

We will have a thorough chat about your needs and wishes, your medical history and risk factors for gum disease. Based on this information, we will tailor your appointment to suit your needs.

Your teeth and gums will be assessed to determine the amount of plaque removal you will need and risk factors will be highlighted. We may use a special dye on your teeth to highlight the areas of plaque build-up.

Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes. This process is also known as scaling and polishing.

One of the most valuable things we do is to show you how to look after your teeth and implants so that they remain free from plaque in the future. You will be advised on the best tooth brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.

We will offer smoking cessation advice and support.

We will discuss your future treatment needs including onward referral to the periodontist for more specialist gum disease treatment.

We will discuss with you the recommended recall between appointments to ensure the health of gums.

Additional services we offer to registered patients:

Cosmetic stain removal

Some stains become more ingrained over time for example, tobacco or tea and coffee stains. These may require a more advance stain removal appointment where we use an air polisher to remove these stubborn stains.

This machine may not be able to be used if you have gum disease or any health conditions which contra indicate its use.

One to One oral Hygiene advice

with one of our specialist oral health educator nurses – Louisa or Emese.

We know that day to day self-performed infection control procedures are imperative for periodontal health. Masseter Botox

Treatment for Bruxism(2) and related symptoms.

Masseter Botox is a procedure in which botox is injected into the masseter muscle(1) to relax it. The masseter muscle is a large muscle that connects our lower jaw to the upper jaw. It is the main chewing muscle, along with the temporalis muscle which is situated at the side of the top of the head.

If you suffer from grinding or clenching (parafunction) of your teeth, or have pain/headaches that are related to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), then Botox into this muscle can make a huge difference.

The muscle is large, so by relaxing some of it to alleviate the excess pressure being put through it during grinding/clenching, the power being transferred to the jaw joint and teeth is much reduced, without stopping normal chewing function.

Our teeth and jaw joints are designed to be in contact for approximately 5-7 minutes total a day during normal chewing – clenchers and grinders can have contact in excess of 8 hours a day…so no wonder we see the damage in the teeth and jaw joints as often as we do.

Like any muscle, the more it is used, the bigger it becomes, and along with this, more power, thus being able to cause more damage. The clenching and grinding usually starts as a stress response, but can very easily become habitual as a result. By reducing the power the muscles can put through the dental structures, the damage caused is reduced as well as the size of the muscle. Botox therefore can act as a stress breaker.

Having 1 or 2 treatments, usually 6 months apart, is often enough to break this habitual cycle. Further treatment may not be required for several years after, although every case is different of course.

For some patients a special mouthguard called a “Michigan Splint” may be prescribed in conjunction with the Botox injections, and indeed the temporalis muscle may also require treatment if this looks to be involved in the clenching or grinding also.

Following a consultation, the treatment can be carried out if you are suitable.

The skin is cleansed, the injection points marked out and the Botox administered.  The treatment is relatively quick and not painful.  Effects take up to 2 weeks to manifest, during which time you may notice it takes you a little longer to chew your food.  A review is then conducted 2-4 weeks after this initial dose to see if you require any further product.

After care:

It is important to NOT do the following 24 hours post-procedure:

  • Touch the areas treated with unclean hands

  • Apply make up to the treated areas

  • Drink alcohol (please keep well-hydrated post-procedure)

  • Exercise

  • Get too hot – hot bath/shower, sauna, sunbathe on hot day

Before your appointment please avoid alcohol for 24 hours before to reduce bruising risk as well.

Implants Abroad

Here at The Implant Centre, we understand the significant investment you are making when you choose us for your implant treatment, both financially and in us as a practice, and this is true of any dental implant clinic in the UK.

The high costs naturally associated with dental implants can deter people from seeing them as a viable option, and this has led to increases in dental tourism – seeking out a clinic abroad that offers a package deal of accommodation along with carrying out the dental work, for rock bottom prices. The most recent phenomenon to have taken a hold, largely thanks to the endless social media posts on the subject, is “Turkey teeth”.

A quick Google search soon throws up endless clinics abroad offering the world: perfect teeth in a few days, including a holiday in the sun whilst you recuperate, at a fraction of the UK cost.

Too good to be true? Well, yes, in short it is.

Patients who come to see us are often amazed at how involved the treatment can be, especially for the most complex of situations: our full arch and full mouth implant cases. Numerous planning appointments, working up of the temporary teeth, the surgery itself and close follow-up afterwards, then constructing the definitive teeth… How can this all be done when you are travelling abroad for treatment? The only answer is: it can’t be.

We have seen countless patients come to us for help when their implants placed abroad have run into problems. Often the patients do not want to return to the original clinic, and finding a dentist here to help them is a challenge, as many dentists do not want to get involved with another clinician’s work, particularly when presented with a mouth full of problems.

Sadly, these patients usually end up paying a lot more than they did originally in order to have the work fixed. Often, the initial treatment cannot be remedied at all, or the patients would have been better off not having had the treatment done in the first place.  Even after spending more money on rectifying the problem, the end result can still be sub-optimal.

As for the aftercare – there is simply no aftercare whatsoever when you buy into these too-good-to-be-true deals.  Granted, it used to be common thought that implants “lasted a lifetime”, but we have enough data and experience now to know this is simply not the case. Well-executed implants that are made with care and consideration for their longevity still need their owner to look after them, and be checked by a professional regularly. Without these factors being considered, the chance of infection and subsequent bone loss around the implants is higher, leading ultimately to loss of the implant along with the bone that supported it, which may preclude the opportunity for a further implant here when this does happen.

The old adage “buy cheap, pay twice” is never more true than when we are discussing the difference between UK dentistry and dental tourism.  Hopefully this current trend will run its course and dwindle in popularity; it surely has to.
