Tooth Extraction
The most common type of oral surgery is tooth extraction (tooth removal).
Reasons for Tooth Extraction
There are many reasons why you might need a tooth extraction.
if you have severe tooth decay and the tooth cannot be saved
gum disease (periodontitis)
dental trauma or a tooth that can’t be repaired
an abscessed or infected tooth. This can form a swelling on the gums or in severe cases a facial swelling.
crowded teeth or wisdom teeth that are impacted and have no space to come through
orthodontic extractions in readiness for orthodontic treatment.
Dentists work to save natural teeth when possible, but sometimes extractions are necessary to preserve your overall oral and general health.
Andrew Brown is a general practitioner with a special interest in Oral Surgery. He has over 25 years’ experience in all aspects of Oral Surgery.
He looks after direct referrals from many dental practices in Sussex managing their surgical cases.
He creates a very calming and supportive atmosphere in the surgery to help his patients, particularly nervous ones, through their treatment.
“...a massive thank you for how my wisdom tooth extraction went. As you know I was beside myself with fear, but actually I don’t even remember much if not anything from the treatment.
I have had zero pain the whole recovery period and only took one dose of painkillers the day of extraction. I really couldn’t be happier with how it went and I know it’s because you and your team are the best!!”

Sedation
Nowadays ‘general anaesthetics’ are confined to hospitals and 'conscious sedation' has provided a safe and effective means to help people through any fears of dentistry, the motto 'aware but don't care' fits perfectly.
The drugs used are short acting, so are largely eliminated by the end of the appointment. There will be traces of the drug remaining in your system so an escort is required to go home. Driving is not permitted for 24 hours after the appointment. It is recommended to avoid any business work, paperwork, online shopping, or social media for the rest of the day as mistakes may be made. It is best to eat lightly and drink normally before an appointment.
Dr Rex Yetton is our anaesthetist who provides sedation at The Implant Centre.
Rex has a gentle caring manner which is very reassuring for patients who are nervous of dental treatments and who can benefit from intravenous sedation
