Should I visit the dentist if I have a cold sore?

FAQs Implant Treatments | Implant Aftercare | Patient Journey

Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters that typically appear on or around the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), specifically HSV-1, and are highly contagious. Once infected, the virus remains in the body and can reactivate, causing recurrent cold sores. The virus is usually transmitted through close personal contact, such as kissing or sharing utensils with someone who has an active outbreak. Stress, fatigue, sun exposure, or a weakened immune system can trigger a reactivation of the virus, leading to cold sores.

It's advisable to contact the practice if you have an active cold sore. In some cases, it may be best to reschedule your appointment, as dental treatments can sometimes exacerbate the condition or lead to the spread of the virus to other areas of your mouth. Always consult the practice on 01273 766 690 for advice on how to proceed.
