Gum Disease Unveiled: Prevention and Solutions for a Confident Smile

Gum disease is the term given to the conditions, gingivitis and periodontitis. Both conditions are caused by dental plaque.

Gingivitis is the initial stage of gum disease and involves inflammation at the gum line, and it is reversible with improved oral hygiene and may never progress to anything more serious. However, in many cases it can progress, leading to periodontitis which is a chronic condition.

Periodontitis is when the gum can peel away from the teeth leading to the gradual loss of the supporting bone, this recession and bone loss is unfortunately not reversible and in time can lead to tooth loss.

Approximately 1 in 5 adults wears dentures, often due to gum disease, with periodontitis being the leading cause of tooth loss in those aged 55 or older. Genetic factors, smoking, diabetes, and certain medications increase susceptibility to periodontitis.

Bleeding gums are a common sign, but some, especially smokers, may not exhibit obvious symptoms. Regular dental visits are crucial for early detection and preservation of gum and bone. For those prone to periodontitis, maintaining excellent daily oral hygiene and seeing a dental hygienist is essential. Severe cases may require referral to a periodontist, a specialist in gum disease.

The most common mistake in teeth cleaning is neglecting the gum line and gaps between teeth. Plaque accumulates in these areas, emphasising the importance of daily interdental cleaning with floss or brushes, especially for those prone to periodontitis.
